The Shellac Display font
Shellac Display started with a tombstone. That type carved into stone became the unlikely spark for Shellac, a bold inline display typeface.I was part of the team that brought Shellac to life. We started with that rigid, historic form, and then pushed against it. By playing with proportion and weight to find something that felt fresh we were able to maintain the quirky tension between the boldness of the letters and the slim inline. Shellac has personality: it’s low-waisted and a little awkward. The inline treatment gives it depth and shine—almost like it’s been a lacquered vinyl, which is where the name comes from.
The result is a typeface that doesn’t sit quietly. Shellac is made to headline. It dances in signage, zines, and experimental layouts. It doesn’t pretend to be neutral, and that’s what I love about it.
